High Fidelity – How John Cusack Made Top 5 Lists Cool

June 7th, 2010 Categories: 2000 Movies, Awesome Movies

The first time you see John Cusack’s character, Rob Gordon speak directly towards you, the viewer, makes you wonder why he’s so distraught. The situation, you see, is that his girlfriend has decided to leave him, and this is an all too familiar sight for our protagonist. It is so familiar, in fact, that he counts down a list of his top 5 breakups throughout his life.

As his mother so candidly points out, Rob has a certain cycle he goes through with women, and he has yet to diverge from it. They meet, date, move in together, and then she leaves. Human nature tends to take over in these instances, and when that happens, history repeats itself. What we get out of this situation is a movie that makes you laugh out loud at the antics of Jack Black, in a supporting role, and Cusack’s character’s journey to figure out what he’s doing wrong in his love life.

Along the way we get references to pop music, and plenty of top 5 lists ranging from the “Best Songs to listen to on a Monday morning,” to the “Top 5 musical crimes perpetrated by Stevie Wonder in the ’80s and ’90s.” Highly enjoyable. Highly recommended.
