MOST POPULAR MOVIES OF 2009
The Proposal – I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. Starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, this little gem will leave any female (and possibly male) viewer feeling joyful when the leave the theater. Although it is predictable, it is a new take on the conventional Romantic Comedy genre. I would recommend this one.
Planet 51: With my love of quirky children’s movies, it’s no surprise that I loved this one. The creators of this film put a silly twist on our classic view of aliens. Instead of an alien invasion, there is a human invasion. The writers put in a whole bunch of “inside jokes” (if you will) and adult humor that any parent will love. A great film for the whole family.
Wolf Man: Although I was entertained during this film, it was too predictable and fake. The director seemed too focused on making scenes look gore-y rather than focusing on that actual story. I’d recommend seeing this one if you’re interested…but not in theaters. This is a movie that I wish I had rented.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Although this movie was long and I didn’t quite see the point, I enjoyed the artsy unconventional take the director took with it. The story is about a boy who, although a brand-new baby, looks like an old man. He continues to become more youthful with age. Because of the length of this film, and no real moral to the story, I’d recommend seeing this movie only once.
The Lovely Bones: The director of this film is an absolute genius. After a young girl is brutally murdered, we see her take on everything that comes before, during, and after the tragic act. Although this story is sad, it is an absolutely beautiful and unconventional take on the horrifying death of this little girl.
Coraline: This is a film that almost any Tim Burton fan will enjoy. It has his creepy, unique, artsy flair all over it. When Coraline moves into a new house she discovers a doll that looks just like her. She begins to take the doll everywhere. Little does she know, a scary witch who lives inside her room (yet, in another dimension of sorts) watches Coraline through the doll and learns the things that Coraline loves and hates. The witch desperately wants a child and plans to win Coraline over with the information she is getting through the eyes of the doll. A fun and creepy flick for the whole family!
